My First Haircut OR, Curly in a Straight-Hair World
Ok well this isn’t my very first haircut, but it’s one of the early ones. Notice how I’m still smiling…
Curly hair is never easy. Once I got older, I realized the dangers of cutting curly hair, because if the stylist doesn’t have experience cutting curly hair, it could be disaster. The last few years in CA I was blessed to have a friend who cut my hair for free. Her daughter has curly hair even tighter than mine, so I trusted her to do a good job and not chop off too much.
And then I moved to Thailand.
After going nearly 6 months without a haircut, I decided it was time for a trim. Repeat: TRIM. It took about that long to work up my courage to go, actually. So last week, I took the plunge. I went to a salon recommended by an American friend, who said the people spoke English and other foreign women had been pleased with their haircut results.
But I knew things would go downhill fast when I told the lady I had just washed my hair, she said “Ok let’s just get it wet” … and then washed it anyways. (Side note – cutting curly hair while wet is a dangerous thing) Then the first thing the hair cutter said to me was, “Short hair???” NOOOOO. I showed him with my fingers how much I wanted off. After trying to convince me to have short hair (NO, JUST A TRIM), or straighten it (NO, JUST A TRIM), he started trimming. Of course it ended up being more than I wanted. 20 minutes and 12 dollars later, I left with my low expectations and low hopes barely met.
I suppose I am making this sound more dreadful than it really is… people have never been able to tell when I get a haircut anyways because my hair just goes in all directions whenever it wants and no one notices. Same this time. But I don’t like having shorter hair, and curly hair just takes its sweet little time to grow. I guess I will still search for a place that knows how to cut curly hair, but having curly hair in a straight hair world is not always easy. Yet, most of the time I like it, and God has a sense of humor in sending me with my fro to Asia. 🙂
Where is the “now” picture? haha I LOVE the toddler pics, very cute!!
