I Tube, do You Tube?
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what is a video worth? YouTube seems to be all the rage these days. It’s turned into a verb, like “google” has — “oh, YouTube it and you’ll see this hilarious video…” I was shopping for a video camera last night, and some models have a YouTube sticker on them, boasting ‘one-click uploads’ to the YouTube website.
If you haven’t spent time on YouTube, I must admit that I don’t think you’re missing a lot. I’ve found some good videos and have been able to understand a little more about our culture through YouTube, but for the most part I feel like it’s another way to waste time and entertain ourselves with other peoples’ public stupidity.
With that said, I would like to announce my new YouTube channel! What?! It took me a long time to break down and become a member. But I think it boils down to the age-old question: do I refuse it because of what I don’t like, or do I use it in positive ways as a method of reaching our ever-changing culture, “redeeming” the good qualities for God’s purposes?
Maybe saying that YouTube can be used for God’s purposes is a stretch for some. But perhaps if Paul lived today, he would use YouTube too – “I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some” (1 Cor 9:22). I have become a YouTuber to reach the YouTubing generation(s) in our culture.
And video speaks. So far I’ve only uploaded my itineration videos that I’ve played in churches. You can see my first video or a recent re-edit. In the future I’ll be posting news and updates on YouTube, so you can see firsthand what life in Thailand is like, and meet my friends face-to-face… sort of.
We’ll see where this new YouTube journey takes me. I Tube, do You Tube?
In reference to Typos:
Hi Lauren, it’s Evelyn. I know exactly how you feel. When we were worshiping in service and they had the words to the songs on the screen, I would get so irritated when I’d see a typo up there for everyone to see! Being the perfectionist that I am (just like you!) I couldn’t understand why someone would allow a typo to go unnoticed (this was every week, too!) like hanging your dirty laundry out in public. I got to the point where I just had to ignore the typos if I wanted to sing along. To me it was more important to worship through song than to let a typo get in the way of praising God. I love your blog! I also want you to know that I read your newsletter and pray for you and your teams every week. It’s a blessing to see how God is changing your sphere of Thailand with what you and your teams are doing there. It’s always a blessing to know that God is working through my prayers, too. This is the scripture I pray for you and your team: “Empower us, as your servants, to speak the word of God freely and courageously. Stretch our your had of power through us to heal, and to move in signs and wonders by the name of your holy Son, Jesus!” Acts 4:29-30. Blessings to you and all who work with you there in Thailand. PS, If you see any typo(s) in this comment, just ignore it (them). I often make mistakes too!
Thank you Evelyn! <3
