Bronchitis

I had never had bronchitis before.  After 12 days of being sick with no relief, I gave in and went to the doctor (on a top 10 list of places I do not like to be).  He listened to my sickly saga, looked in my throat, listened to my breathing via stethoscope, and immediately gave the prognosis: bronchitis.  The result: a flu vaccine (to ward […]

QUEST 15 January 2011

We went to Ob Khan, a nearby national park, for the first QUEST of 2011.  Our topic was “God knows your future” and we had four stations for rotation with different activities and a testimony at each one.  What fun it was!  We had an awesome response too, with over half of the students expressing an interest in Christianity and a few students who want […]

A State of Not-Knowing

My Thai language skills are far from fluent, and although many people compliment me on speaking “so clearly”, the breadth and depth of my vocabulary leaves much to be desired.  This means that I am often suspended in a state of not-knowing. Example:  (Any dialogue in Thai will be in italics) Right now I have a sore throat and stuffy nose, and my voice is […]

Resolutions, Smesolutions

I am usually not good at making New Year’s resolutions, and I am worse at keeping them if I make them at all.  So I really surprised myself last week when I decided to do something for the New Year.  I’m not sure if I should call it a resolution (sounds too formal, fixed, and final!) or a goal (sounds more positive, and forgiving if […]

This is Thailand: All About Gifts

I recently bought speakers and a DVD player at a local electronics store called Siam TV… probably the Thai equivalent of a Best Buy and Radio Shack.  When I went to pick up the product at the dock behind the store, they presented me with this gift as a thank you for shopping at Siam TV. Ah, a Kleenex box holder in gold-and-fake-wood-plastic.  I seriously […]

This is Thailand… It costs an arm and a leg!

Or mostly just a leg.  Here is a display for prostheses that was at a recent race I ran.

Christmas at TLC English Center

Our Christmas party at TLC English Center was a blast!  Students and church members joined together for a delicious BBQ dinner, Christmas cookie decorating, games, and a re-enactment of the Christmas story!  We sang carols by candlelight and learned how Jesus is the Light in our darkness.  Merry Christmas!

QUEST December 2010

We had a QUEST event at the beginning of the month, and our topic of discussion was how God helps us in our studies.  Three students came, and we had a lot of fun!!! Oh and we had dinner, games, and ice cream too.

“Mehlee Kreet-sa-mat!”

Translation: Merry Christmas! It is Christmas season — the third week of Advent, actually — and I’m a little behind in my usual Christmas-holiday-spirit.  I’m trying to figure out why.  I don’t think it’s because of the weather (I know some of you could never fathom a Christmas without snow, let alone a winter with highs in the mid 80’s.  Christmases in SoCal aren’t too […]

Race of Legends! Laguna Phuket Triathlon 2010

1.8km swim (1.2km in the ocean + 100 meter dash across the sand + 600 meters in a freshwater lagoon) + 55km bike (route with three long, steep hills and uncountable sharp curves … in the rain) + 12km run (on trail, pavement, cobblestone, and golf course) = The Race of Legends! I promise, I didn’t make that up.  (Check it out if you don’t […]
